InstructureCon 2026: 5 Days of Human-Centered Innovation, AI, and Active Learning

InstructureCon 2026 has officially wrapped up in Louisville! Across 5 action-packed days, the global EdTech community: educators, instructional designers, system leaders, and partners came together around the theme "Education in the Making" to shape the future of learning.

Beyond the excitement in the Partner Hall and the live demos at our booth, this year’s event delivered a clear message: AI in education is no longer about novelty or raw efficiency, it is about deepening human connection and supporting pedagogical practice.

Here is our recap of the week, the key takeaways, and how Wooclap fits into the bigger picture. 

Rethinking AI: From Productive Efficiency to Human Connection

The opening keynote set a powerful tone for the entire week. Michael Horn (author and educational innovation expert) joined Melissa Loble (Chief Academic Officer at Instructure) for a fireside chat that flipped the standard AI narrative on its head.

Instead of treating AI purely as a time-saving productivity tool, they posed a fundamental question: What if AI’s real power is giving teachers time back for what matters most, building meaningful relationships with their students?

This human-first perspective echoed throughout subsequent keynotes:

• Anne-Laure Le Cunff (author of "Tiny Experiments") urged institutions to embrace an experimental mindset—testing AI through small, iterative pilots rather than waiting for absolute certainty.
• Dr. Ravi Pendse (VP IT & CIO at University of Michigan) complemented this with essential institutional guardrails: keeping data sovereign ("our data remains ours"), keeping humans in the loop, and ensuring technology never short-circuits critical thinking.

What Makes AI Truly "Educational"?

One of the week’s sessions tackled a critical distinction: What separates true educational AI from generic consumer AI rebranded for the classroom?

The consensus was clear. Purpose-built educational AI:

• Optimizes for learning outcomes, not just superficial engagement.
• Preserves productive struggle for the learner rather than doing the thinking for them.
• Anchors itself in pedagogy to empower teachers rather than replace them.

This distinction was brought to life in the "From Pilot to Practice" sessions, showcasing real-world implementations, from no-code learning apps at the University of Sydney to AI-driven science tutoring at Johns Hopkins and a 2-year pilot with over 1,500 students at Notre Dame. The common thread? Every successful deployment was co-designed with educators.

Wooclap x IgniteAI: Bringing the Vision to Life

This pedagogical framework shaped how we approached our integration with IgniteAI.

During the "New & Next: July Product Updates" session, presented to 600+ educators and EdTech leaders, Instructure unveiled Canvas’s strategic roadmap built on three core pillars: Teaching & Learning, Assessment & Growth, and Credentials & Opportunity.

As part of the Teaching & Learning roadmap, Instructure showcased our Wooclap MCP (Model Context Protocol) integration with IgniteAI!

Why this matters:

Our MCP integration will allow instructors to generate interactive Wooclap questions directly inside Canvas using the IgniteAI agent. It cuts down lesson-creation effort while keeping active learning and student engagement anchored in sound pedagogical practice.

And this is just the starting point: Wooclap MCP will extend well beyond question generation, toward supporting instructors across the full teaching cycle, from preparing a session, to the live moment, to understanding how students actually learned once it's over.

Partner Summit & Final Connections

Beyond the mainstage presentations, the week started with strategic alignment during the Partner Summit, where we met with Instructure’s leadership to ensure our long-term roadmaps continue to serve educators seamlessly and ended with energizing discussions at our booth during Friday's closing sessions.
