In early 2015, Wooclap launched its platform and took part in one of the Microsoft Innovation Center’s programmes. Its founders wanted to use technology to promote interaction between higher education teachers and students in an innovative way. How? By answering questions using one’s own device. Three years and tens of thousands of users later, Wooclap is announcing the next step in its collaboration with Microsoft.
What can Wooclap do? Wooclap is an online platform, on which teachers can create questions to ask their students during class. They then answer using wifi/4G or text messaging, and this simple interaction makes for a more dynamic class. The advantage? Everyone, shy or outspoken, gets a chance to voice their opinion and test their knowledge, which also allows teachers to notice immediately when students are having trouble with the material, and remedy the situation before it gets worse. In addition, these live Q&A’s often have a stimulating effect on classroom debates.
Three years after being founded, the platform is already being used by thousands of educators, spread over more than 100 countries.
This enthusiasm is what brought Microsoft and Wooclap back together to further improve the platform. A Wooclap add-in for PowerPoint will be made available in June of 2018, which means PowerPoint users everywhere will be able to insert questions directly into their presentations. Thanks to the real-time display of results in their slides, teachers will have greater ease adapting to the needs of their students during class.
What does the Microsoft team think of this?
“We’re thrilled to put Wooclap for PowerPoint at our users’ disposal, and excited at the potential these interactive presentations hold.”, says Benjamin Nizet, Education Account Executive at Microsoft.
Cécile Jabaudon, Operational Director of the Microsoft Innovation Center Brussels, and who has been following the startup since its inception, added “We’re delighted with Wooclap’s development since its participation to our guidance programme in 2015. Sébastien Lebbe and his team have managed to carve out a spot for themselves on the market of education, and their collaboration with Microsoft, which will result in Wooclap’s availability to every PowerPoint user in the world, marks the start of a new phase in the company’s growth.”
According to Sébastien Lebbe, co-founder of Wooclap, “the collaboration with Microsoft helps us a lot with the development of the platform. The overwhelming majority of teachers use PowerPoint on a daily basis, and the fact that they will soon be able to add an interactive aspect to it is great news for all involved.
